The Basics Of Home Office Design

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Because of the way the economy is today, many people are starting their own home based businesses and are reaping the benefits of lower overhead. However, the space must also be usable as a work environment, and the design should provide creative inspiration. Home Offices are usually converted garages or basements. The best way to approach this problem is to decide what elements need to be brought together to achieve this effect.

Even if you are a well organized person, if your workspace is not organized first, you will be less effective. Much time will be wasted looking for the things you need at hand at all times to work efficiently.

Designing your space with some basic design principles in your back pocket e will be most effective. Do not clutter your space with needless stuff. Try to simplify. Put those items that are not key to performing the tasks at hand someplace else. Instead, keep things around you that are motivational and geared to your goals.

Expanding your storage space can start with putting up a shelf at around thirty six inches and higher. Books, art, and papers can be organized an creatively displayed for maximum utility with minimal clutter. Good storage is the key to any successful workplace. Planning how you do this is important, because without clutter you will be more productive.

The choice of color in your workspace can heighten your mood and creativity. If possible, try to choose a color that you find relaxing and contemplative. A poster or other art can heighten your mood, and can serve to positively influence any client visitors.

If you have no door to close on your home office, there are other ways to separate the spaces to help your concentration. A sheer curtain, a folding screen, or other divider which can easily be moved will help make your area feel contained and peaceful. Also, your closed curtain or divider can serve to indicate to those in your home that you are busy with work, lest they disturb you.

If you need to expand storage such as filing, you can easily get a two drawer file unit, cut a round top about two inches larger that the surface out of three quarter plywood. Put the circular piece on top of the cabinet and put a round table cloth to the floor and voila! You can use it as an end table or a night table next to the bed. When you need to access the file, just lift the skirt. (Ok guys; get your mind back on track.)

A self contained wall unit is highly recommended in any office. It serves to store papers and books, while showcasing art. You can also have brochures and a business card holder with your cards on them.

Everything is all self contained, including filing, computer space, storage and room for a printer all behind doors that you can close up and lock at the end of the day.

If you have taken these suggestions to heart, a well organized workspace will be yours, and you will be very productive with minimal stress!
